Exactly 30 years after the first Toy Story film debuted, launching the animation giant as a leading film company and introducing viewers to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed recently, offering a glimpse into the storyline but leaving viewers curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang

In the teaser reveals the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a latest toy, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (the actress), traveling with a carnival and assisting prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the prior film. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the insignia pinned to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the key figure among the toys.
