France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the UK.

This policy shift comes after the British leader sent a letter to the President urging him to support the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.

French security forces will be allowed to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.

French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.

"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."

Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states officers will start intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.

Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to disable the propellers of the boats.

The decision to take action at all is a major advancement, following a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this summer, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister departed from office.

This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.

Now French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats before they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.

Strong winds are currently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adjust to evade interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.

The Home Office and Downing Street have been contacted for comment.
