Over two dozen Olympic champions, mentors and additional global sports figures have signed a statement demanding a end to the capital punishment of a champion boxer and coach, who is on death row in the country.

Escalating Worldwide Condemnation

Vafaei Sani, three decades old, from the city in the northeastern region, was arrested for participating in national uprisings in 2019 and indicted of supporting an opposition group. He has spent five years in incarceration, where he has been mistreated and kept in isolation.

“Athletics is intended to encourage hope, solidarity, and bravery,” the endorsers expressed. “The capital punishment of a titleholder for his opinions is a clear violation on these principles and a warning to every athlete who attempts to voice opinions.

Pattern of Putting to Death Sports Figures

The statement noted that the boxer's case was part of a pattern and underscored Iran’s history of putting to death competitors for their beliefs, including Habib Khabiri, leader of the national football team, and a women's sports leader, captain of the national women’s volleyball team. In 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year-old national sports titleholder, was also executed.

Further signatories to the appeal include a yachting pioneer, who captained the pioneering all-female crew in a global yacht race and was the first woman to receive a esteemed sailing award; the ex- leader of the Australian football team Craig Foster; and a footballer, who was in the Iranian squad for the global tournament.

Detention and Unfair Trial

The athlete was detained in March 2020. The accusations against him entailed “promoting decay on Earth through incendiarism and ruin of government belongings”. His sentence has been annulled twice but on 4 October it was confirmed on the third attempt. His court case was denounced as “highly unjust” by rights defenders and groups.

Urging to International Body
